Mike, Brigitte, and Elvira visited the Otsuka family in the spring of 2026. They day we arrived was the very first day for this tea and this tea season! The Otsuka family has been growing tea in the coastal hills of Kakegawa for nearly 150 years, and their devotion to the craft is visible from the fields themselves: one nearby hill has been trimmed into the shape of the Japanese character for "tea." This Ichiban is their pride, made from the tea fields that surround their factory.
"Ichiban" means "first," and this tea earns the name( Ichibancha) , harvested in the earliest days of the season, typically late April, when the young leaves are at their most concentrated. The tea plant has had all winter to accumulate theanines that give good body and sweetness. And the cathechins (like EGCG) have not yet overpowered the theanines. It is made at an old, traditional factory and then finished at their plant. The result is a sencha with real presence: bright and vegetal upfront, with a clean citrus lift that keeps it lively through the finish. Compared with the polished and almost pastoral quality of Matsuda's Sencha, this Ichiban has the punch and intensity of Tokyo's rush hour.

Yerba maté occupies a world of its own among caffeinated drinks, and this tisane delivers the full, unvarnished experience. Light green flakes brew into a deep, murky green liquor with an assertive vegetal character, grassy and sharp, with notes that recall fresh green bell pepper. The briskness is real, and nothing about it is subtle. That directness is the point: maté has fueled morning routines and afternoon conversations across South America for centuries, carried in gourds by the Gauchos of Argentina long before it crossed into the wider world. Its energy comes from a different chemical profile than tea or coffee, offering a clean, sustained lift with a character all its own.
If you're new to maté, start here and drink it straight before reaching for sweetener. If you already know what you're looking for, the tisane delivers.

"Before learning from Stanley Mason, tea was just a nice drink. He showed me how to make great teas and also taught me the traditions of tea. What he gave to me, I passed on down to my sons. Please enjoy this simple blend of Assam and Darjeeling." - John Harney
Panyang, a town in northern Fujian Province, has been producing fine, beautifully complex black teas for centuries, and this Congou we source carries that long tradition forward. The long, twisted leaves with scattered golden tips brew into a dark amber cup that's mellow and unhurried rather than bold and brisk. Where Golden Monkey, its Fujian neighbor, leans sweeter and lighter, Panyang Congou settles into something quieter and more grounded. It's an ideal afternoon cup for days when you want depth without intensity.
The only tea we offer from Sikkim, the cup brews nicely and has a stone fruit quality to it. The leaves that make up our Temi Sikkim give it a smooth honey finish, making it perfect for your afternoon brew.
Beginning on August 27, 2026, Elyse Harney has committed 50% of sales of Nepalese and Darjeeling teas to the Nepalese Red Cross via the American Red Cross.
Anniversary Blend is an updated version of a classic tea blend that John Harney first offered back in 1983. It features silvery Ceylon and golden Assam, accented by Ceylon Silver Tips and Assam Golden Tips. Besides making the blend extra special, these teas offer added sweetness and elegance.
A centuries-old favorite of Japanese aristocrats, Gyokuro is one of Japan's finest tea offerings and the most famous of Uji's teas. This highly esteemed emerald tea is shade-grown for approximately three weeks, producing after harvest an infusion of the beautiful pale green color from which it earns its name. Steep with water heated gently for an initial infusion, and enjoy the exquisite, sweet flavors and aromas of Uji's finest tea.
Tea cultivation has only begun in the Ali San area of southern Taiwan in recent decades. Before that, deforestation covered the high mountains in the area. Now, the picturesque mountains produce excellent balled-style oolong teas, similar to those from southern Fujian Province. Ali San was one of the first areas in southern Taiwan to produce high mountain teas. Around 30 years ago, Taiwan's tea industry underwent a significant transformation. They shifted from producing traditional teas for export to the West to focusing on producing high-quality oolongs for the thriving local market. Now, we can all enjoy the delightful, lemony, and creamy flavors of this lightly oxidized oolong.
Kagoshima sits at the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, where a warmer climate pushes the growing season earlier and gives the region's teas a character distinct from the cooler prefectures further north. This tea is built around the Yutaka Midori cultivar. The name means "intensely green," a variety prized for its vivid color and clean vegetal expression.
The blend combines light and deep-steamed Senchas, a pairing that balances brightness with a slightly fuller presence. The lighter steaming preserves more of the leaf's volatile aromatics and allows a natural sweetness to come through that heavier steaming would mute. The deep steamed leaves contribute a heavier body. The result is a cup well suited to anyone drawn to the gentler end of the Japanese green spectrum.
Organic Chun Mee is a traditional green summer tea from China with a lightly roasted vegetal taste. When John Harney started in the tea trade over 30 years ago, Chun Mee was one of only two green tea offerings from China, along with Gunpowder. Our offerings have greatly expanded since then, yet many people still enjoy Chun Mee's familiar taste.
Uva Highlands is a high-grown Ceylon Pekoe from Sri Lanka's eastern slopes, where the famous highland winds strip moisture from the leaves and concentrate their character. The result is a brisk, intense black tea with a cooling wintergreen note. In fact, it’s the same compound, methyl salicylate, that gives mint its kick. It is a tea that wakes you up and demands your attention. A splash of milk rounds it beautifully, or drink it straight if you want the full bracing effect.
